Three Lessons I Learned from Networking in 2024

Career

As a connector at heart, nothing brings me more joy than listening deeply and matching people with resources, ideas, or opportunities that meet their needs. I've always been this way, even as a kid. This year, I leaned into networking with intention, and here are 3 lessons I’m walking away with:

Networking Works Best with Purpose
Gone are the days of formal, stuffy business card exchanges—at least in the circles I frequent like BACDurham (and thank goodness for that!). This year, I realized that showing up with clear intentions—whether to learn, share, or connect—made networking uber rewarding and enjoyable. Saying YES to Branch Directing with Happy Healthy Women, hands down was one of the most impactful things I've done this year. It's literally changed me, and my business.

Community is the Antidote to Isolation
Entrepreneurship can be lonely, but networking reminded me that I don’t have to fear becoming a lone wolf. When I transitioned from the nonprofit world, I missed the camaraderie and sense of shared purpose that came with being part of a team. Networking helped me rebuild that sense of connection. It’s not just about collaboration—it’s about rediscovering the support and camaraderie I value. Building a community isn’t just beneficial for my business; it’s become a lifeline for me staying grounded and inspired.

Generosity is Key
Networking isn’t about what you can gain; it’s about how you can serve. This year, I prioritized giving—sharing recommendations, resources, and introductions—and discovered that generosity strengthens connections. People remember when you genuinely care about their success. As a therapist, I can’t exactly thank you for referrals, but I’ll admit—I always smile when someone tells me who sent them my way. It’s such a great reminder of the trust and connection we’ve built, and I’m so grateful for it.In 2024 networking hasn't just a tool for growth; it’s become a way to foster connection and combat the isolation I was feeling in private practice. It’s about being intentional, showing up authentically, and contributing to the collective success of my community, but most of all having an IMPACT.What’s one thing you learned about networking this year? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments.
